Students all over the world are studying other languages. We should be no exception. Studying a world language has many advantages, from understanding people from around the world, developing friendships, and traveling abroad to having an edge with college admissions and enhanced career opportunities later. Understanding other languages and cultures helps students develop global competence and perspective. It broadens their horizon and helps with working comfortably in any diverse community right here in Kansas.

Enrolling in a world language as a freshman or sophomore will offer students more opportunities later, such as enrolling in an AP Language and Culture course or learning more than one language. If a student stays with a language through high school and passes an AP language course they will earn college credit at all Kansas universities. To be eligible for a Kansas Regents Scholarship students will have to have at least 2 years of the same language.

Since 2016, the State of Kansas has been offering the Kansas Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to students who are proficient in English and one or more languages at the intermediate to low advanced level. To reach this level, students have to study a language for four years, unless they are a heritage speaker. If they are a heritage speaker or have lived in a Spanish, German, or French speaking country and know the language, they can start their language study at a higher level, even as a freshman.
